Midnight Commander

Midnight Commander is a text-based tool for doing ftp. It gives you a split-pane view (local and remote) and has drop-down menus for file copy, rename/move, delete, chmod, etc. Seems pretty robust and fast.

I have run into one little problem. You can split the panes horizontally or vertically. Vertical is more convenient and that's how I started out. But somewhere along the way m-c got confused and it will no longer show both panes in vertical mode. I think both panes are actually there, but one pane completely fills the window area, obscuring the other one. So I've had to use horizontal split.
