We bought this thing in early May 2003 - it was on special offer for $150, with no additional monthly fee. It is very cool. Easy to use, quiet, convenient. It has:
commercial-skip : 30 second ahead and 10 second back buttons. 5 minutes of commercials become 10 button clicks.
one hour buffering of the currently-watched channel. So you can pause, rewind, etc.
watch one recorded program while recording another.
fast forward/backward at X4, X15, and X60 speeds. X4 is very smooth in appearance
slow forward/backward at 1/15, 1/4 speeds.
very easy to set up recording timers - use the on-screen guide to find a program anytime in the future (up to one week), hit enter and fill out the menu choices. You can record once, daily, weekly, or mon-fri. Also, you can either record, switch-to without recording, show reminder without switch-to, or record to VCR (see next item)
built-in IR blaster - you can control your VCR from this thing. We haven't tried this yet (need to move the VCR to get it close enough to the PVR).
The remote has partially and intermittently stopped working. Sometimes it 'resets' by just tapping it lightly. We've changed batteries twice just to be sure. Customer support told us last week they would ship a replacement remote. This evening I got home and found a new receiver on my front step. Not what I wanted. Now they say they will ship the remote for real, but we're stuck having to ship the receiver back to them. Small grrrr. Fortunately most functions on this remote are identical to the ones from our previous receiver, and the PVR functions seem to still work reliably. So we just switch back and forth between the 2 remotes as needed.
